THE HOUSE OF ZAN — Zan
The Desire Interferences are a four-part sequence inside Cycle I: Coming on Strong — The Hidden Voice.
They live inside The Record, but outside the regular run of Cycle I pieces. Each one interrupts the larger sequence to examine desire from a different angle.
That interruption is intentional.
The four pieces divide the larger Record into movements while carrying an argument of their own.
Wanting another person sounds simple until another person gets involved.
Desire can begin inside us, but eventually it runs into somebody else’s reality. Who we think we are. What we see in them. What they are free to choose. What happens when they choose us back.
This is what I want.
A record of presence, the self I want another person to recognize; projection, what desire can make me see in someone else; agency, why surrender only matters when it can be chosen; and reciprocity, what becomes possible when another person can answer, remain, and affect me back.
Together, they move through four questions of desire:
Presence. Projection. Agency. Reciprocity.

The Desire Interferences
Desire Interference 1-1 · Presence
The first is about presence, going back through MTV, nu metal, masculine performance, adolescent sexuality, dominance, and the parts of an exaggerated identity that can still reveal something real about the person underneath it.
Desire Interference 1-2 · Projection
The second is about projection, looking at the way attraction changes the language we use for damage, how culture can make darkness look desirable, and what happens when the things we recognize in another person are tangled up with what already exists inside ourselves.
Desire Interference 1-3 · Agency
The third is about agency, moving through trust, consent, control, surrender, bodily vulnerability, Holy Smoke, and the difference between something happening to a person and a person knowingly choosing to let it happen.
Desire Interference 1-4 · Reciprocity
The fourth is about reciprocity, moving from desire into relationship through memory, jealousy, missed connection, dominance, submission, and the point where another person’s freedom to choose becomes part of what gives the connection its value.
Where To Start
The four Interferences can be read as their own sequence or as part of Cycle I.
You do not need the rest of the Cycle first. Everything necessary to follow is contained within these pieces.
Each piece can stand on its own, but the full path is meant to be read in order:
Presence asks what I want another person to recognize when they look at me.
Projection asks what desire can make me see, excuse, rename, or want in another person.
Agency asks why surrender matters only when it could have been refused.
Reciprocity asks what becomes possible when another person’s choice can affect me back.
They begin with wanting, but wanting is not large enough to contain all four pieces.
They are about masculinity, attraction, culture, kink, consent, control, memory, relationship, recognition, and what happens when identity stops being only something we tell ourselves because somebody else has responded to it.
