The Authorship Interferences: Voice, Creator, Judgment, & Command

Cycle II: Coming of Age
The Hidden Life
The Authorship Interferences
THE HOUSE OF ZAN — Zan

The Authorship Interferences are a four-part sequence inside Cycle II: Coming of Age — The Hidden Life.

They live inside The Record, but outside the regular run of Cycle II pieces. Each one interrupts the larger sequence to examine authorship from a different angle.

That interruption is intentional.

The four pieces appear after every six main Record pieces, breaking the Cycle into larger movements while carrying an argument of their own.

They exist because writing now gets questioned in ways it did not before. A piece can be too polished, too structured, too strange, too long, too deliberate, or simply too much of itself, and suddenly the first question is whether a person actually made it.

This is my answer.

A record of the voice, the creator behind the worlds, the judgment over what survives, and the command over what the tools are allowed to do to my identity, thought, and communication.

Together, they move through four questions of authorship:

Voice. Creator. Judgment. Command.

The companion tracks follow a similar path through artists whose presentation can make them easy to dismiss before you notice the craft underneath: Okilly Dokilly, Ninja Sex Party, OK Go, and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The Authorship Interferences

Interference 2-1 · Voice

The first is about voice, going backward into old published writing, old habits, old jokes, and a version of me that existed long before generative AI gave anyone a new reason to be suspicious of polished language.

Interference 2-2 · Creator

The second is about the creator, beginning with a handwritten story from 2002 full of names, rooms, histories, deaths, rules, and a cursed piece of real estate made before I had regular access to the computer required to make the work acceptable.

Interference 2-3 · Judgment

The third is about judgment, moving through preservation, revision, missing artifacts, memory, deletion, Re-Hash, prototype builds, and the choices that decide what gets preserved, what gets changed, what gets deleted, and which version is finally allowed to survive.

Interference 2-4 · Command

The fourth is about command, taking the argument directly into AI: what the tool can do, what it cannot do, what happens when better language starts replacing the person behind it, how I use the machine, why I distrust it, why it became part of The House of Zan, and why entering the process does not give it authority over the art.

Where To Start

The four Interferences can be read as their own sequence or as part of Cycle II.

You do not need the rest of the Cycle first. Everything necessary to follow is contained within these pieces.

Each piece can stand on its own, but the full path is meant to be read in order:

Voice asks whether the sound was already mine.

Creator asks whether the person creating the worlds was already there.

Judgment asks who decides what gets revised, preserved, deleted, and allowed to survive.

Command asks who remains responsible for the meaning when AI enters the process.

They are about AI, but AI is not large enough to contain all four pieces.

They are about authorship, memory, evidence, preservation, tools, identity, and what happens when a person has to prove that the thing coming through the machine still belongs to the life behind it.
