Playlist Track: Addison Rae — “Diet Pepsi”

Nothing announces the point when their messages stop being ordinary.

They still talk about broken apps and things neither of them finishes. Between those conversations, they begin discussing what a dynamic might look like if it belonged to them instead of a profile.

He asks what she wants rules to do for her.

She says she wants somebody to notice when she is drifting and tell her what to do next. He says he can pay attention, but he cannot promise to guess everything she refuses to say.

She likes the first part more.

They talk about check-ins, privacy, and the difference between a bad feeling she wants to push through and one that means stop. They choose a word that means stop even if everything before it meant yes.

He tells her that changing her mind would not count as failing.

She saves that message.

Nothing they discuss includes meeting. The whole thing still fits inside the phone.

His voice notes get longer. So do hers. He sounds certain about what he can hold. She sounds more certain each time he believes her.

Then he asks, “do you want to try this with me? here, for now. not just talk about what it might be.”

She leaves the message open.

The site is still waiting behind the conversation. Other people have written to the version of her that says unsure. The side account has new reactions. None of it disappears while she decides.

She starts typing, “i’m just seeing what happens.”

The phone finishes the sentence before she does.

She deletes it.

She tries, “i think so.” Then, “maybe.”

Both answers would leave the same door open. That is why she removes them.

She writes, “yes. i want to try.”

Her thumb stays above Send long enough for the screen to dim. She touches it awake and reads the question again.

Then she sends the answer.

The message changes to Read.

Typing dots appear beneath it.
