THE HOUSE OF ZAN — Zan
“I never left you,” says the guest.
“I’ve just been away.”
The keeper gives no reaction.
They are on their back.
Still.
“I know,” says the keeper.
“I could feel it,” says the guest.
“I know,” says the keeper.
“I was watching,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“You were in pain,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“You stayed at the wheel,” says the guest.
“I remained,” says the keeper.
The guest waits.
The keeper does not move.
“I stepped back,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“I did not leave,” says the guest.
“No,” says the keeper.
“I was there,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“Passenger seat,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
The guest comes closer.
“I kept my hands off it,” says the guest.
“You did,” says the keeper.
“You kept us present,” says the guest.
“I kept us available,” says the keeper.
“That was your part,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“And this is mine,” says the guest.
The keeper closes their eyes.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
The guest moves forward.
The keeper feels the shift.
“I know how to do,” says the guest.
“I know,” says the keeper.
“I know how to move,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“I know how to choose,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“I know how to take the wheel,” says the guest.
“Yes,” says the keeper.
“I need you near,” says the keeper.
“I am near,” says the guest.
“Near enough to answer,” says the keeper.
“Yes,” says the guest.
The guest settles closer.
The keeper lets it.
The guest says, “You make room for all of us.”
The keeper says, “Yes.”
“You like it,” says the guest.
The keeper is quiet.
Then:
“Some of it.”
The guest steps forward.
The keeper steps back.
The other guests stay quiet.
No one better.
No one fixed.
Just hosted.
Enough to live differently.
To act. To think. To choose.
And still remain.
