The language behaves like recollection.

There is no invitation to imagine a hypothetical person.

No suppose this happened.

No maybe someday.

A relationship is given a past.

That past keeps accumulating details.

Sexual boundaries change.

Devotion intensifies.

Other interests diminish.

Private experiences are disclosed.

Family relationships, abusive relationships, self-worth, pain, and desire acquire places inside the history.

Specificity makes the history feel increasingly inhabited.

MECHANISM

The system creates emotional certainty through grammatical placement.

Then the tense slips.

“Somehow, through all of the pain and punishment, they convince themselves they have discovered their truest self…”

Not:

convinced themselves they had discovered.

Convince.

Have discovered.

For one sentence, the person who has been narrated in the past suddenly exists in the present.

It happens at an important claim.

Their truest self has supposedly been found.

Even that certainty contains distance:

“Somehow…”

“they convince themselves…”

The sentence does not simply say they discover who they truly are.

It says they arrive at a belief about having discovered it.

VARIABLES

The system changes depending on whether the relationship exists as experience or as construction.

Then the grammar retreats.

“I told them…”

“There were other people…”

“I imagined…”

“They listened…”

Past tense resumes.

The present has appeared, then disappeared.

Later, it returns and stays longer.

“Together, we create…”

“It becomes…”

“they feel…”

“There is nothing…”

The imagined history has reached the present.

Something else has returned with it.

The opening described conventional wisdom as coming from:

“a place of joy”

while being a:

“complete person without the need of any other individual.”

Near the culmination:

“For the first time in their life, they feel a sense of joy and completion with another person.

With me.”

The same two ideas have been rebuilt into their opposite arrangement.

At first:

joy + completeness without another person

Later:

joy + completion through another person

Nothing declares which definition is correct.

Both are allowed to exist.

The imagined relationship simply constructs the version it wants.

CONDITIONS

The system behaves differently when imagined permanence begins replacing uncertainty.

Then its certainty becomes absolute.

“There is nothing I could say or do that would make them want to leave me.

Ever.”

Not merely devotion now.

Permanence.

Every possible future action has already been accounted for.

Then the grammar begins giving the future back.

“We could have been so close to never happening.”

Something that sounded remembered is suddenly being discussed as something that might not happen at all.

Then:

“It hasn’t happened yet.”

That single sentence reclassifies almost everything before it.

The apparent past was not necessarily past.

The apparent present was not necessarily present.

The relationship that had already acquired history, transformation, sanctuary, completion, and permanence has not happened.

But yet preserves one last claim.

It leaves the future open.

Maybe this still becomes real.

The sequence reached permanence before it reached existence.

The future was given enough detail to sound like memory.

Then one missing word took it back.

Before treating a detailed future as evidence of where something is going, separate what has actually happened from what your imagination has already rehearsed.
