Getting Ahead… (1-11) — An Analysis

THE BLACKLIGHT // DEVELOPER CONSOLE

INPUT

Before anything else, independence is established.

“I know you are able to think for yourself…”

Then comes the condition:

you would only do what someone else tells you if it were something you wanted too.

That sounds protective of individual choice.

It also creates a convenient explanation for anything that follows.

If you agree, the agreement was yours.

If you comply, you must have wanted to.

Influence becomes harder to see because independence has already been declared.

Then agreement begins accumulating.

“I think anyone would agree…”

Anyone would have their own style…”

Anyone should feel at ease…”

Anyone would agree…”

Obviously…”

“I think we would both believe…”

“In closing, you may agree…”

“You may even think…”

“You may want…”

————————

MECHANISM

The system moves agreement from a general observation into a personal conclusion.

The movement is gradual.

Anyone.

Then you.

Then we.

Eventually you and me.

A general claim about what reasonable people believe slowly becomes a description of what the person reading should believe, then what two people supposedly believe together, then what they might want to do privately.

The word may preserves the appearance of openness.

You may agree.

You may think.

You may want.

But the sentence still provides the thought.

The choice is left grammatically available while the preferred conclusion is supplied in advance.

————————

VARIABLES

The system changes depending on how agreement is interpreted.

Then agreement becomes connected to trust.

“Anyone would agree that you can trust someone that thinks the same as you do.”

Followed immediately by:

“The more you listen to someone, the more you can find yourself agreeing about the same things.”

That creates a loop.

Listen.

Become more likely to agree.

Treat agreement as evidence of trust.

Listen more.

The mechanism is being described while the reader is participating in it.

That makes the repeated word same important.

Someone who thinks the same as you.

Agreeing about the same things.

Wanting the same thing.

Sameness becomes reassuring.

Difference receives far less room.

————————

CONDITIONS

The system behaves differently when agreement reaches the limits of the original claim.

At first, control is treated as an absolute.

The person performing the act is “always” the one in control.

Several paragraphs reinforce the claim through technique, presentation, location, enjoyment, and choice.

Then an exception appears.

Under another form of the act, the earlier rule “would not hold true.”

The person who was previously always in control would now have none.

“Your control would be surrendered, or taken…”

Surrendered, or taken.

Those are not equivalent descriptions.

One leaves the transfer with the person surrendering it.

The other places the action somewhere else.

Yet both are placed beside each other as routes to the same result.

Then comes the question:

“Do you think [the two acts are] the same…?”

A few lines earlier, one had been distinguished from the other specifically because the central claim about control no longer applied.

Now:

“I think we would both believe the answer to be a hard YES.”

The language has just supplied evidence of difference and then supplied agreement about sameness.

DEBUG LOG

Detected: Agreement was presented as evidence of independent thought while guiding the direction of that thought.

Updated: General statements gradually narrowed into personal expectations.

Flagged: Similarity became a shortcut for trust while difference became less visible.

Reclassified: Choice remained grammatically available while the preferred conclusion was preloaded.

CURRENT STATE

That may be the clearest demonstration of the method.

The preferred answer does not need the preceding argument to remain perfectly consistent.

It needs we to arrive at the answer together.

There is another smaller instability on the page.

The word one repeatedly becomes the numeral 1.

“always the 1 in control.”

“These are things 1 might consider…”

“the other 1…”

Then elsewhere:

“if I am being…”

On the page, 1 and I begin sitting unusually close to each other.

Especially in:

“These are things 1 might consider…”

The sentence can mean an impersonal one might consider, while visually approaching I might consider.

The distinction between a general person, the reader, and the speaking I is already moving elsewhere in the language.

The typography gives that movement another small place to happen.

By the closing, the destination is no longer general at all.

“You may even think it would be a good idea to continue discussing [this] in private with me.”

The progression has narrowed completely.

Anyone agrees.

You agree.

We agree.

Perhaps you want something with me.

Then the final suggestion begins:

“You may want to do it before it is too much to…”

Nothing completes the sentence.

That absence is different from the earlier questions.

Most of the thoughts have already been supplied.

What anyone believes.

What you might think.

What we supposedly believe together.

What you may want.

At the end, one thought is finally left unfinished.

The reader has repeatedly been told they think for themselves.

Then the language gives them a sentence they have to finish for themselves.

Before treating agreement as evidence that someone reached a conclusion independently, notice how much of the conclusion was supplied before they had to form it.
