Cycle I: The Record can be read without the music.
The tracks are not necessary to understand the pieces, but they are part of the complete experience.
I chose every track carefully, both for what it brings to the piece beside it and because the music comes from my own listening life.
They come from the same personal vocabulary as the pieces themselves.
Each Companion Track adds another layer to the piece beside it.
The playlist draws from some of the music that shaped my youth: 1990s female-led alternative rock, indie, shoegaze, trip-hop, singer-songwriter music, and the sounds around them.
It is music I enjoyed then and still do now.
That female presence runs throughout The Record, while the Interference pieces deliberately break into it with heavier, louder music from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The interruption is part of their purpose.
The two Arrangements sit outside that era entirely. Jazz opens and closes the sequence, framing the thirty tracks from somewhere older, looser, and less literal.
The Record comes from a different musical generation than The Hidden Girl, even when the two playlists occasionally cross paths.
Sometimes a track reinforces what the voice is saying.
Sometimes it pushes against it.
Sometimes it brings something forward that is not stated.
Sometimes it holds onto something the piece leaves unresolved.
Some pairings are clear right away.
Others may take longer to reveal why they are there.
Let the music play underneath the piece while you read.
Listen again afterward.
Come back later and see whether the song or the piece feels different.

The voices never stay in one place for long.
Neither does the music.
A song can make a piece feel more certain.
It can make it less certain.
It can bring forward something that was easy to miss in the words, or leave you with a different version of what you thought you heard.
Not every voice asks to be understood the same way.
Not every track stands beside it for the same reason.
Some connections may feel obvious by now.
Others may still refuse to settle.
That is part of what remains.
The pieces can change the way you hear the songs.
The songs can change what you hear in the pieces.
That space between them is part of The Record.
