Content note: References gothic romance, blood imagery, and intense Master/slave style devotion inspired by Dracula.
If I had to give an example of how I see myself, as a Master in a romantic dynamic space, it would be found in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
While Dracula is almost always associated with the horror genre, the 1992 adaptation, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, leans heavily into the romantic themes that were present in the original book.
I’m going to approach a narrow aspect of the film, ignoring practically everything else, to focus on the dynamic of Dracula and Mina, the reincarnation of his long-lost love, and how I am able to see a part of myself within the prince of darkness.
If you haven’t watched the 1992 movie version, read the book, or have forgotten, I present you some quotes that underline why someone so intense, frightening, and blood-thirsty as Dracula is capable of expressing himself romantically and still retaining his allure as a dominating figure.
Dracula: I have crossed oceans of time to find you.
Dracula: Do you believe in destiny? That even the powers of time can be altered for a single purpose? That the luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds… true love?
Dracula: Absinthe is the aphrodisiac of the self. The green fairy who lives in the absinthe wants your soul. But you are safe with me.
If you were to watch the movie, or a short clip online, you would be able to feel the delivery of these statements. The tremble in Gary Oldman’s voice, the actor portraying Dracula, as he peers into the eyes of his love, conquering her to his will, all the while relishing in his desire for her with each passing breath.
To further venture into the abyss of my mind, if I was to use an example in a film that carried just the smallest essence of how the romantic side of an M/s dynamic should progress, this exchange between Dracula and Mina would be an example:
Mina: I want to be what you are, see what you see, love what you love.
Dracula: Mina, to walk with me you must die to your breathing life and be reborn to mine.
Mina: You are my love… and my life, always.
Dracula: Then, I give you life eternal. Everlasting love. The power of the storm. And the beasts of the earth. Walk with me to be my loving wife, forever.
For context, this was an exchange that was earned over time, not just from their past lived lives, but once again through Mina, the reincarnation of Elisabeta, his long-lost love. Up until this point, it was Dracula that vigorously pursued Mina. Even in his human form, charming and confident, she met him with rejection and reluctance. Ultimately, he was able to overcome this and acquire her mind, body, and soul – completely.
When viewed from the perspective lens of the kink lifestyle, I feel an appreciation can be found in this type of devotion to another when partaking in the Master/slave lifestyle dynamic.
A bondage stronger than the oceans of time.
